Car manufacturer inventories portal for global operations: new development phase

Begun in 2011, this project is developing an inventories portal for a car manufacturer that draws on global operations data to offer reporting, forecasts and management controls. Infotel came on board in 2018 to extend services and enhance development.

Application context

Infotel began development in 2018, building on the first version of the project, (inception 2011, with a 2013 16 dev phase), a dedicated inventories
portal retrieving data handled on the client mainframe. The system comprises several application views providing snapshot summaries and drill downs of the client operations globally , with a UI that enables non technical administrators to access, assess, manage and forecast.

Application modules (Production Control, Volume Management) retrieve stock, shifts, parts, volume, suppliers, schedules and personnel data for
management and forecast projections. An advanced filtering system helps refine and control the complex datasets and operations.

Current development focus for the Infotel team: Operational Dashboard , a system for subscribing to and watching status alerts.

 

PAIN POINT

All of the client’s operations data is held on its mainframe, founded on now ageing programming languages. As such, there is no viewing UI, any interactions with the data, such as applying filters, requires technical expertise and wading through multiple screens.

PROJECT GOAL

This is to change operational access to inventories with the build of a web portal that enables key non technical personnel to view data
and create inventory projections (manpower cost savings).

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

As well as adding new functionality with a raft of web services, the Infotel team is seeking to improve performance by reviewing and updating build foundations; in addition, making improvements in the development process with a focus on agile methodologies and emphasis on delivering value.

NEW FUNCTIONALITIES, NEW DATA:

For each dataset required on the front end, the development process involves requests for mainframe programmers to write and schedule subroutines,
setting up contracts (particular to region) so that RESTful web services can be engineered and data delivered to the front end via API endpoints.

ORACLE DATABASE

Incorporated to build alerts data system, mapped and synced with associated mainframe data.
