DB2 MasterReorg® for z/OS

Optimized Management of Reorganizations in the Utility Batch Window

MasterReorg automatically optimizes use of the utility batch window allocated to administrative processes.

Analysis, Ordering, and Scheduling of Reorganizations

MasterReorg ranks reorganizations by decreasing order of disorganization and generates its processing schedule based on the resources allocated.

Iterative Update of the Processing Schedule

The schedule generated takes into account the time allocated to reorganizations and makes sure they are finished before the deadline.MasterReorg updates the schedule after each process taking the host resources available and current system load into account. The concept of a deadline is not considered by traditional operational automation, meaning that a reorganization may be started even if there is not time to finish it. Use of the utility batch window is not optimized and few objects are reorganized.

Dynamic Reorganization of Objects

MasterReorg
  • The objects that are the most disorganized or are about to become disorganized are determined without the use of prior Runstats
  • Priority is given to the most disorganized objects
  • As many simultaneous reorganizations are started as allowed by available resources
  • At the end of each reorganization, the next reorganizations that can be completed within the remaining time are selected.

The estimated time of each reorganization is readjusted based on the actual time of the reorganizations just completed.

Additional Features

MasterReorg
  • The simulation option (batch and interactive) shows the objects that would be reorganized by running MasterReorg
  • During execution, MasterReorg MasterReorg continuously updates a historical database accessible from the interactive interface
  • MasterReorg guarantees the state of the data on opening of the TP. The error cases are managed and an automatic restore takes place in case of an error
  • A copy option generates one or more Full Image Copies after each reorganization.
  • MasterReorg ensures data availability by an option that leaves the data available for read access during reorganization
  • Runstats and Rebinds can be scheduled immediately after reorganizations by MasterReorg
  • To prevent the data from becoming disorganized too rapidly, MasterReorg MasterReorg allows reorganizations to be performed less frequently by intelligently distributing the available space. An option allows adjustment of the number of free pages around the update hot spots in the tables or indexes.
